North of Lake Roosevelt in the remote Salome Wilderness, a ribbon of water draining the Sierra Ancha Mountains cuts through the rugged desert creating a narrow canyon in Salome Creek.  This canyon offers us one of the premier canyoneering opportunities in southern Arizona: Salome Jug.

We stay the night on the shore of Lake Roosevelt in the Tonto National Forest amongst saguaro cactus and great sunset views.  Early the next morning, we hike to Salome Creek and splash through the upper pools amongst riparian desert vegetation to reach the slot canyon, or “Jug”.

Entering from the top of the Jug, we will hike, rappel, swim and scramble down 5 miles of canyon, amongst the towering pink granite walls and pools of Salome Jug.  We will experience smooth vertical walls, canyon-filling pools, huge boulders, hanging gardens and plummeting waterfalls.  Swimming ability required .
