10/25 Passport to Dance: Latin Music and Dance with Ritmos Latinos

Ritmos Latinos is going to present you "Rueda de Casino" which is a group dance from Havana, Cuba. Pairs of dancers form a circle and one person "the caller" calls out dance moves which are performed at the same time by the whole circle. All of the moves have hand signs to complement the calls; these are useful in noisy venues, where spoken calls might not be easily heard. Majority of the moves involve the swapping of partners so you get to dance with everyone. If you have ever encountered square-dancing this might seem familiar, the difference is that we are in a circle and dancing to the salsa beat!

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that incorporates elements of acrobatics, dance, self-defense, and culture. Developed in Brazil during the colonial period, capoeira has transcended race, culture, age, and gender to be practiced everywhere around the world. Grupo Axé Capoeira was founded by Mestre Barrão in Recife, Brazil and now has chapters in over 25 countries. Join up with your fellow wildcats and learn not only the history of capoeira, but the fundamentals of the hybrid self-defense and dance art form!

11/15 Passport to Dance: Raqs Sharqi

Raqs Sharqi (literally "oriental dancing") is the classical Egyptian style of belly dance that developed during the first half of the 20th century. 'Sharqi' or 'Classical' Egyptian dance expresses the rich and beautiful traditions of Egyptian Arabic classical music. There is an emphasis on musicality in Egyptian dance: movements take on new qualities to express the melodies, rhythms, moods and instrumentation of the music. In other words, the movement conventions reflect the music. I focus on a fusion of Raqs Sharqi with modern dance forms.
