Campus Recreation Inclusivity Statement

Campus Recreation strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. We believe a healthy, active and engaged lifestyle is a right afforded to everyone. To that end, we are committed to equal opportunity and inclusion for all people regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or genetic information. Please join us in living these values.

Diversity & Inclusion advisory group

Campus Recreation is working with a broad based group representing many campus organizations to discuss how to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. Additionally, various focus groups are being conducted. Strategies discussed and implemented to date are listed below.

Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

  • Inclusivity Statement
  • Web page dedicated to these efforts (this page)
  • Safe Zone training for all full-time staff and diversity and inclusion training for all student staff
  • Use of UA's new preferred name instead of legal name in the recreation software
  • Educational programs through campus partners on healthy body image
  • Educational programs through campus partners on nutrition
  • Free weight room orientations and low cost customized fitness orientations
  • Workout Partner sign up at weight room desk
  • Diverse facility amenities designed to reach all audiences (e.g. Table Tennis tables, Foosball Tables, Video Game stations, etc.)
  • Re-organization of 2nd floor weight room equipment into a circuit (easier to follow for beginners)
  • More hand weights in more locations and more smaller weight hand weights
  • More equipment and space dedicated to functional fitness
  • Expanded slate of health and wellness program offerings
  • More inclusive publicity photos (a work in progress!)
  • Sanitary napkin receptacles in all restroom stalls regardless of gender
  • Lobby Lockers for rent* (located by the exit turnstiles by Smart Moves Studio)   https://rec.arizona.edu/services/locker-rental
  • Gender inclusive restroom/shower room* now available (located in the hallway by the exit turnstiles by Smart Moves Studio)

Coming Soon:  Complete Locker Room Renovation to include gender inclusive / family style spaces*

*Until the locker room renovation is complete, recreation staff have installed lockers for rent near the Smart Moves Studio that are not associated with a specific male or female locker room. Additionally, two gender inclusive restrooms (each with a shower) are now available off the main lobby. This created self-contained gender inclusive/family style shower/restroom spaces suitable for any body. Campus Recreation recognizes that this is an interim solution only until the locker room renovation is complete.

Restroom and Locker Room Policy

As mentioned above, the recreation center has 2 gender inclusive restroom/shower room spaces and several additional gender inclusive restrooms. Campus Recreation is pursuing a complete locker room renovation to update the space and provide for new inclusive design. The following UA policy on restroom access is posted in the current recreation center locker rooms.
