Job Description: 

Perform a variety of duties to support the Department of Campus Recreation Aquatics program.  Responsible for ensuring that the facility is safe for patron use by preventing and promptly responding to emergencies. Must enforce the Department of Campus Recreation & Campus Rec pool policies and procedures; additional duties may include but are not limited to assisting with special events, swim lessons and health and safety class instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

-Attend staff/instructor meetings and trainings

-Model department values and expectations

-Knowledgeable in and enforce Department of Campus Recreation policies and procedures

-Complete weekly fitness swims of 500 yards

-Stay proficient in all American Red Cross rescue techniques

-Take preventative action for hazards and injuries that may take place in the pool or on the pool deck

-In the event of an emergency, activate the Emergency Action Plan. Administer First Aid and/or CPR as needed

-Special projects as assigned

Training and Certifications Required: 

The successful incumbent is required to have the following certifications and training:

-Valid CPR-PR/AED and First Aid Certification from an approved provider (American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute) are required within 30 days of hire; Employees are required to obtain these certifications at their own expense. Campus Recreation offers a discount on certification classes for eligible employees. Other certifications may be considered. Check with your supervisor prior to making arrangements to obtain these certifications.

-All Department of Campus Recreation employees are required to complete blood borne pathogen training within 45 days of hire and renew on an annual basis.

-Complete New Employee training which includes but not limited to Emergency Action Plan, Nondiscrimination and Anti-harassment Policy training, All-Employee Security (Computer) Awareness, and Online Driver Registration & Golf Cart (if authorized)  

 

Application information

 

Any interested students can attend a three day interview and job training to be considered for hire as a Lifeguard at Campus Recreation. Over the three days, we will describe our expectations for the job and evaluate applicants’ lifeguard skills, communication, teamwork, and flexibility.

Candidates must attend all training sessions outlined below to be considered for the position and possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certifications.

Day 1- Monday November 27th 6:30-8:30pm

Position Expectations- What’s it like to be a Lifeguard at the Rec?

Lifeguard Prerequisites skills- 300 yard swim, 25 yard brick retrieval, 2 minute tread

Team Building Activities

 

Day 2- Wednesday November 29th 5:30-8:30pm

Current Lifeguard staff will demonstrate Campus Recreation lifeguard standards

Lifeguard Candidates will practice Campus Rec lifeguard skills to meet the standard- Lifeguard Water skills, CPR and First Aid

 

Day 3- Thursday November 30th 6:30-8:30pm

Deck Tour & Introduce Campus Red EAP

Scenarios & Group Interviews

Team Building & Critical Thinking Activities

 

Attire: casual sport attire (appropriate for performing CPR and First Aid skills) as well as lifeguard or alternative sport swim suit (appropriate for performing water based lifeguard skills)

 

Required Qualifications: 

-Excellent customer service skills

-Detail oriented and self-motivated

-Must be enrolled at UA for a minimum of 6 credit hours (employment is contingent on enrollment)

-Possession of current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR-PR, and Standard First Aid certifications. Copies of certifications are required to be on file with the Department of Campus Recreation

-Upon being hired, lifeguards must correctly demonstrate the following American Red Cross rescues for a distressed swimmer, active drowning victim and a passive submerged victim, and shallow, deep-water spinal turns must be performed

-The applicant must also meet the following fitness standards:

-500 yard swim, with 100 yards of each of the following strokes- freestyle (front crawl), breaststroke, and sidestroke

-Retrieve the 10-pound diving brick from 10 feet of water

-Early morning, evening and weekend availability; flexible scheduling and break availability
