Campus Recreation Open Recreation Policy

Campus Recreation makes various department operated facilities available to recreation members for the purpose of open / informal recreation participation. Such open recreation receives priority use as determined by the department’s funding source. Portions of the facilities will be dedicated to open recreation during all operating hours. Campus Recreation defines Open Recreation as the voluntary and unstructured use of recreational equipment and facilities. These opportunities include, but are not limited to, physical activity in the weight room, multipurpose rooms, basketball, volleyball, badminton, racquetball, wallyball, squash, free swim, table tennis, climbing, indoor soccer, and outdoor soccer. Open Recreation requires no registration or payment prior to participation. Minimal setup may be required for some Open Recreation opportunities such as setting up nets or goals for specific sports.

All Campus Recreation members and approved guests may participate in a variety of Open Recreation opportunities at the Student Recreation Center. Open Recreation has priority for facility use in the Student Recreation Center. Open Recreation permits the general membership population the ability to participate in a variety of activities without having to compete for space with organized programs, rentals, or events. Campus Recreation will maintain dedicated informal recreation space during operating hours, although there will be times when rentals and Campus Recreation events reduce the available informal recreation space. Campus Recreation maintains an Open Rec Calendar for the basketball courts which can be found at rec.arizona.edu/openrec.  Most equipment available for Open Recreation can be checked out at the Equipment Check Out desk for no cost.

Organized Use and Specialty Groups

Facilities are available to organized groups on a rental basis. Groups of 5 or more individuals monopolize equipment and facilities, intentionally or unintentionally, making them unavailable to the general membership. Individuals from organized groups may participate, but must disperse into smaller groups so as not to overwhelm any area or activity during dedicated informal recreation times. Campus Recreation staff will make the final determination if a group of people are permitted to participate in Open Recreation offerings without making a reservation.

Private Instruction

No instruction by non-authorized coaches, trainers or instructors is allowed.
