A New Chapter
Nearly two decades after the original Wildcat Icers skated off the ice, University of Arizona Women's Hockey returned with a renewed vision and an even greater ambition: to build one of the nation's premier ACHA Division I programs. Starting from the ground up once again, the modern Wildcats embraced many of the same challenges their predecessors once faced—building a roster, earning community support, recruiting top talent from across North America, and establishing a championship-caliber culture.
When the University of Arizona announced the program's return, Head Coach Caitlin Hogan was presented with a rare opportunity: the chance to build a program from the very beginning. Rather than rushing the process, Hogan dedicated an entire year to laying the foundation before the team ever stepped onto the ice. She traveled throughout North America searching not only for talented hockey players, but for the right people—student-athletes who would help shape the culture and identity of Arizona Women's Hockey for years to come.
That inaugural recruiting class was assembled with purpose. Beyond skill and athletic ability, the Wildcats sought competitors who embodied the program's core values: grit, hockey intelligence, relentless work ethic, and unwavering character. Every player was selected with the vision of creating a fast, disciplined style of play while fostering a culture built on accountability, selflessness, and a team-first mentality.
The results came quickly. In its inaugural season, Arizona finished 20th nationally in the ACHA Division I rankings—an impressive achievement for a brand-new program competing against long-established opponents. The Wildcats built on that success in Year Two, climbing to 15th in the nation and establishing themselves as one of the fastest-rising programs in collegiate women's hockey.
But the program's growth extends well beyond the rankings. Arizona has quickly earned a reputation for attracting talented student-athletes from across North America while cultivating a close-knit team culture, strengthening its connection with the Tucson community, and creating an exciting game-day atmosphere that continues to grow each season.
Today, the Wildcats take the ice with a clear purpose: not simply to compete, but to contend. With a strong foundation in place and a vision for sustained excellence, University of Arizona Women's Hockey is building something that will last for generations.
