Job Description: 

Perform a variety of duties to support the Department of Campus Recreation Fitness program.  Responsible for conducting group fitness classes in a dynamic, safe, and constructive manner; maintain a high level of motivation and control in classes while exhibiting friendly, kind, energetic, outgoing and enthusiastic qualities. 

Instructors must complete in-house Campus Recreation Training and demonstrate a professional appearance and demeanor both on and off campus that favorably represents the University of Arizona and the department of Campus Recreation.  Instructors are responsible for coverage of scheduled classes. Instructors are responsible to earn their NCCA Certification within 6 months of hire date in order to continue being a part of the Fitness team. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

-Attend staff/instructor meetings and trainings

-Model department values and expectations

-Design and implement fitness classes for groups of participants based in the areas such as yoga, Pilates, resistance training, core, dance-related classes, or sport-related classes

-Demonstrate safe programming, proper technique and explain exercise modifications using verbal and physical cues to enable all members to participate

-Be prepared for EVERY class with appropriate format lesson plans and arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class

-Confirm class attendees are registered for class and appear on the roster; inform participants in regards to canceled or make-up classes

-Special projects as assigned

Training and Certifications Required: 

-Fitness Instructors may be required to audition for the hiring supervisor and/or selected committee; exceptions may apply.

-In-house Group Fitness Training Course with the expectation of earning NCCA Certification within 6 months of hire date

The successful incumbent is required to have the following certifications and training:

-Valid CPR-PR/AED and First Aid Certification from an approved provider (American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute) are required within 30 days of hire; Employees are required to obtain these certifications at their own expense. Campus Recreation offers a discount on certification classes for eligible employees. Other certifications may be considered. Check with your supervisor prior to making arrangements to obtain these certifications.

-All Department of Campus Recreation employees are required to complete blood borne pathogen training within 45 days of hire and renew on an annual basis.

-Complete New Employee training which includes but not limited to Emergency Action Plan, Nondiscrimination and Anti-harassment Policy training, All-Employee Security (Computer) Awareness, and Online Driver Registration & Golf Cart (if authorized)  

Required Qualifications: 

-Excellent customer service skills

-Detail oriented and self-motivated

-Complete in-house training requirements

-Personal fitness level that enables the employee to perform activity without risk to himself or herself or risk to the participant

-Must be enrolled at UA for a minimum of 6 credit hours (employment contingent on enrollment)

-Early morning, evening and weekend availability; flexible scheduling and break availability
