10/20/17 Lightweight Backpacking, Santa Catalinas

Traverse the Santa Catalina mountain range on this weekend backpacking trip. Learn to live simply as you carry everything you need on your back, spend your nights under the stars, and hike through a variety of life-zones in the mountains. We will begin our journey near the summit of Mount Lemmon, dropping down to camp in the Wilderness of Rocks, keeping our mileage short and downhill to get used to carrying a backpack on our first day of hiking. For our second day, we will drop down to Romero Pass and join the Arizona Trail. Taking advantage of our light packs, we will cover some solid miles descending the high Catalina valleys, camping near the watering and swimming hole at Hutch’s Pool. On our final day, we will head up through Sabino Basin and pass Sycamore Dam. This dam is at the headwaters of Bear Canyon and Seven Falls and is located in a beautiful riparian area. We will exit at the Gordon Hirabayashi Trailhead, passing the site of the old prison and internment camps.

This trip includes a required pre-trip meeting where we will orient the group to equipment and techniques, give detailed instructions on how to pack for the trip. If you have an interest in learning backpacking and back-country living skills and are looking for a fresh perspective on adventure on Mt. Lemmon, this is the trip for you.

Exertion level: Moderate/High. No experience necessary, but must be able to hike while carrying a 15+ lb pack.
