This 23-mile canoe trip will take us down the Gila River through the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. Designated a Riparian National Conseration Area in 1990, the Gila Box preserves pristine corridors of four perennial water souces: the Gila River, the San Francisco River, Eagle Creek, and Bonita Creek. This section of the Gila River is narrow and winding, with rocky Shoals, quick moving chutes and small wave trains, making it a perfect spot to learn whitewater canoeing.

Lake Powell Coastal Kayak Trip

“The [canyon] turned and twisted like a snake under overhangs and interlocking walls so high, so close, that for most of the way I could not see the sky.” –Edward Abbey on Glen Canyon.

Spend 5 days traveling by kayak beneath the deep canyon walls of Lake Powell. Red sandstone cliffs, arches, ancient ruins, petroglyphs, and breathtaking view—only accessible by boat—are ours to explore.  We will move camp daily, between natural caves and beaches at the water-front. Take the opportunity to also hike in remote slot canyons and relax on sandy beaches. With beautiful cool weather and minimal motor boat traffic, November is a great time to be on Lake Powell. Participants can expect to paddle between 5 and 10 miles each day.

Our pre-trip meeting will cover trip logistics and cover kayak safety skills. Each participant will learn to wet exit and perform a rescue during our skill session in the UA Rec Center pool.
