Youth Swim Lessons

Welcome to Youth Swim.

Our program allows everyone the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, at their own pace. Swim classes are taught by certified, knowledgeable and caring instructors who can help swimmers at every level feel comfortable in the water and progress to the next level. Lessons are open to all members of the Tucson community.

LEVEL 1 - SEAHORSE

Level 1 is an introduction to water skills. Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it. 

What You Will Learn

Participants will be able to:

  • travel at least 5 yards from the wall
  • glide on front supported at least 2 body lengths
  • float, roll and self-sufficient breath control

Course Delivery

Level 1 takes place on the west end shallow end of the Campus Rec pool which is 3-3.5ft. deep and is temperature-controlled to a range of 81-84 degrees year-round.

Swimming lessons include a variety of activities including direct and indirect teaching techniques.  Each 30 minute lesson can be observed to include the following components:

  • Welcome & Water Safety topic
  • Water Warm-up
  • Review Skills- taught through games and drills
  • New Skills- taught through games and drills
  • Games & Drills- to reinforce learned skills
  • Wrap-up and Water Exit

Please Note: Our swim lesson program progresses participants through the learning process of swimming.  Participants will start at their entry level and after successfully completing a skill checklist can progress to the next level.  Each participant learns at their own rate and repeating a level is normal for the learning process of swimming. 

Weather policy: In the event of inclement weather (thunder & lightning) the pool is closed for 30 minutes after the last lightning sighting. During this time, lessons could be delayed up to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes past the start time, the lesson will be cancelled. Cancellations are processed on a case-by-case scenario and communicated with participants via email.

LEVEL 2 - SEA TURTLE

Level 2 dives into the fundamentals of aquatics. Students will learn basic swimming skills. 

What You Will Learn

Participants will be able to:

  • practice with swimming farther distances independently
  • roll on front and back
  • back float and kick while on their back

Course Delivery

LEVEL 3 - SQUID

Level 3 focuses on stroke development. Additional guided practice will help students improve their skills. 

What You Will Learn

Participants will be able to:

  • combine arm and leg practice with freestyle
  • use arm movements in order to stay afloat
  • practice with leg positioning and kick technique
  • breath on their back while swimming farther distances

LEVEL 4 - SHARK

Level 4 targets stroke improvement. Students will gain confidence in swim lessons, improve their stroke and learn additional skills. 

What You Will Learn

Participants will be able to:

  • learn rotary breathing with freestyle for independent lap swim
  • backstroke with combination of arms & legs
  • swim longer distances with freestyle and backstroke to build endurance

Course Delivery

Level 4 takes place in the northern area of the shallow end of the Campus Rec pool which is 4-4.5ft. deep and is temperature-controlled to a range of 81-84 degrees year-round.

LEVEL 5 - WILDCAT

Level 5 focuses on stroke refinement. Guidance allows students to refine their strokes and become efficient swimmers. 

What You Will Learn

Participants will be able to:

  • focus on butterfly and breastroke
  • practice with elementary backstroke and freestyle, gaining endurance
  • learn the dolphin kick with wingspan arm motions
  • learn the frog kick with a breastroke pull

Course Delivery

Level 5 takes place in the northern area of the shallow end and in line 15 of the Campus Rec pool which is 4-4.5ft. deep and is temperature-controlled to a range of 81-84 degrees year-round.
