About Arizona Ice Hockey
The Arizona Wildcat Hockey program offers a truly unique and deeply rewarding college hockey experience, setting itself apart with a rich tradition of excellence, both on and off the ice. Our program is built on a foundation of dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship, fostering an environment where student-athletes can thrive academically, athletically, and personally. Through a commitment to elite competition, player development, and strong leadership, Arizona Hockey continues to uphold a standard of success that extends far beyond the rink, shaping well-rounded individuals prepared for life after hockey.
The Legacy of Arizona Ice Hockey
The University of Arizona Hockey program has a rich history that dates back to 1978, when passionate students took to the ice at Tucson Convention Center (TCC), proudly wearing NHL Atlanta Flames jerseys—a nod to the team's "A" logo that closely resembled Arizona's own identity. This grassroots effort laid the foundation for what would become one of the most storied non-varsity hockey programs in the country. In 1979, under the leadership of Head Coach and General Manager Leo Golembiewski, the team officially became the Arizona Icecats, competing as a Division 1 non-varsity program. Through Coach Golembiewski’s vision and dedication, the Icecats not only built a fiercely competitive team but also played a pivotal role in shaping the future of collegiate club hockey. His efforts helped establish the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) in 1991, creating a national platform for non-varsity programs to thrive. Over the years, the program evolved into Arizona Wildcat Hockey, continuing to honor its legacy while fostering a culture of excellence, camaraderie, and Wildcat pride. From its humble beginnings to its impact on the national stage, Arizona Hockey remains a powerhouse program committed to developing elite players and lifelong Wildcats.
