International Flags Display

Students from around the world: The International Flags of The University of Arizona

A permanent display showcasing the images of international flags was installed in the Student Recreation Center on March 8, 2019.  The images adorn the walls of the main hallway and represent the home nations of UA students dating back to the year 2000 (the beginning of the 21st century). Each flag is numbered to correspond with its location on a world map located at the beginning of the display.

"Students from Around the World" celebrates the international diversity of the University of Arizona.  It is part of a larger Campus Recreation program of Celebrating Our Diversity.

To honor all UA students, both nationally and internationally, and to make everyone feel welcome to use the recreation center.

The UA community is made up of people from across the globe and our diversity is part of what makes the UA so great.  Different ideas, beliefs, perspectives, and experiences bring real world knowledge to this educational institution.  This helps us expand our horizons, push our boundaries and reach greater heights and achievements—ultimately, contributing more to the world.  At Campus Rec and across campus, we celebrate those aspects that make us who we are, including our international diversity, enabling us to become truly a global community.

Campus Recreation welcomes the entire UA community to engage and participate in recreational activities in pursuit of overall wellness and well-being.

Following the United Nations guidelines, flag decals are shown in alphabetical order, as of the time of the initial plan and production, February 2019.  Future additions/changes will be addressed without reordering the current layout.

Note:  One-China Policy

In accordance with the One-China Policy, the United States recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China, acknowledging the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China. As a public state university, the University of Arizona follows the United States’ government lead in adhering to the One-China Policy. Here at Campus Rec, when creating our International Flags Display, we were recommended by UA Global to also adhere to the One-China Policy and only display the flag of the People’s Republic of China. However, we respect the views of Taiwanese students at UA and recognize the great contribution their national, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds have brought to the diversity of the UA and Campus Rec community.

Campus Recreation's International Flags Display was completed in cooperation with UA Global—Hilary Beggs, Manager, Logistics and Events, and Frank Camp, Director, Marketing & Communications.

For Phase 2 of this project, we will be working with UA Tribal Relations Council.

Please direct any questions, comments or concerns to Troy Vaughn, Campus Rec Director: troyvaughn@arizona.edu.

Additions and changes to the current composition of the display will be handled annually (around the Winter Break timeframe), based on the listings in the most recent UA Fact Book. Any errors will be handled as soon as possible.

Campus Recreation held an Opening Ceremony for the International Flags Display on March 21, 2019.

Director of Campus Recreation Troy Vaughn officially opened the display.
